Innovations in Automobile Industry

Automotive industry has been one of the greats who have pushed the industrialization to its limits. When one has to concentrate about efficiency more than anything else, innovation becomes a necessity rather than a luxury. The Automotive industry has seen countless new innovations which has made some car greats and some absolute duds.

Now with the growing prices of fossil fuels, the end to the current transmission system seems inevitable. It was always believed that when we will reach the point at which fuel will become so costly it will no longer seem viable, alternative transmission system will come to rescue and researches will find a way out of the mess. But the truth of the situation is that the alternative transmission system is still not a practical solution.

With all this in mind, we as a group will showcase some of the amazing past innovations of automotive industry, challenges ahead and possible solutions.

The point of concern for us is that the project as of now seems uni-directional. We would like to welcome new ideas from the group to suggest new dimensions to the topic.

Thanks,

  1. I might not be providing a solution but this is one of the questions that also keeps coming to my mind. The last time any major innovation came across in the automobile industry as far as engines are concerned was about 80 years ago. What prevents large companies from doing so ? Are the companies being influenced by some external forces to not make such a thing.

If we can send sattelites to Mars, we sure can re-design an engine. I am too fed up of reading about the same petrol and diesel engine designs throughout my life ..

  2. Have a look at process innovations, not only product innovations. Besides powertrain innovations, product innovations usually lag in the automotive industry. Process innovations (e.g. shorter R&D, faster time-to-market, cheaper assembly, cheaper raw materials, etc.) are very interesting. Also, India is a leader in that field (e.g. Nano, Scorpio, etc.).
