Innovations in Stem cell research and its implications for mankind

We aim to look at the various innovations happening in the field of modern Stem cell research. There are various ways in which stem cells are harvested. Stem cells have been found to be extremely useful in treating genetic diseases, syndromes and various anthropological defects which otherwise can't be cured through any known form of medicine.

In the Indian context, emergence of companies like Life Cell International and ReliCord have been encouraging in this field. These companies presently harvest umblical cord cells which are essentially a rich source of Stem cells. By asking parents to preserve the stem cell of their babies, they stress on insuring the child's future against potential life threatening genetic disorders. Currently, the services are so priced that only SEC A and the creamy layer of SEC B can afford stem cell banking. We would like to look at innovations happening in this field, do a need gap analysis and find out whether innovations can ensure economic scalability of this process. Scalability would ensure easy affordability for the masses and improve the health of many people who otherwise suffer silently. As a part of the project, we plan to talk to people actively involved with Stem cell research and find out whether scalability in Stem cell banking can be done or not and if yes, what are the potential ways in which innovation can be done.

We look forward to your insights, comments on the scope of the project that we have in mind. Valuable suggestions and constructive criticism is always welcome.

Regards,
Sandeep and Rachit

  1. EThical issues related to stem cell need to verified - whether they are inhibitors to the research or not?
