Lost Innovations

Lost Innovations:
"Takshashila (Taxila) was an early center of learning dating back to at least the 5th century BC. Generally, a student entered Takshashila at the age of sixteen. The Vedas and the Eighteen Arts, which included skills such as archery, hunting, and elephant lore, were taught, in addition to its law school, medical school, and school of military science." This picture is quite different from our modern universities, or even the later Nalanda University. Ancient and medieval history have been dotted with magnificent innovations that have become lost to us. The times of Harappa, Mesopotamia, Chinese martial arts, European Renaissance all presented numerous innovations that were accepted widely, but got lost in the sands of time.
We are attempting to piece together these innovations in our project, and to research the reasons and circumstances of their loss. We would love any help regarding noteworthy innovations across times (say the electric car), as well as your views on how innovations get lost before the end of their need.
